Biography

 
 

Since completing her music degree at Oxford University  where she gained a Starred First for her finals examination recital (reputedly one of only two people to achieve this accolade as a singer), Penny has combined solo singing work, with a busy teaching schedule and role as Head of Singing at the School of St Helen and St Katharine, Abingdon.  She has also taught at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music.


She has achieved acclaim at the Oxford, Chipping Norton, York, and Saltburn Music Festivals, winning Oratorio, Lieder, British Song, Operatic Aria, Humorous Song, and Recital Classes, as well as achieving a prize for the best overall performance in the Saltburn Music Festival.  She has received both the Isobel Bailie Cup, and the prestigious Song Recital Award at the Oxford Music Festival.  


Roles in operas and opera extracts have included Countess, The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), Desdemona, Othello (Verdi), Belinda, Dido and Aeneas (Purcell) and Mother, in the World Premiere of Pascha Nostrum (Caldwell).  Oratorio performances have included soprano soloist in Handel's Messiah, Bach's St Matthew Passion, Magnificat, ‘Herz und Mund’ Cantata and Mass in B Minor, Fanshawe's African Sanctus, Faure’s Requiem, Gounod's Messe Solonelle De Sainte Cecile, Jenkins' Armed Man, Mass for Peace, Mozart‘s Requiem, Rossini Petit Messe Solonelle and Telemann Cantatas 20 and 21. She has performed numerous  recitals in venues such as the Holywell Music Room, Oxford, New College, Oxford, and Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland.  Penny has also taken part in Masterclasses with Ryland Davies, Malcolm Martineau, Susanna Stranders, Robin Bowman, Simon Over, James Bowman, Ann Lampard and Claire Weston.   


At university she sang with Magdala, The Arcadian Singers and the Choir of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.  As a choral scholar at St Peter's College, she regularly performed solos and toured Prague, Dublin, Venice and Gibraltar.  Penny was a frequent guest singer with Lincoln College Chapel Choir, and also often sang with members of the Oxford Choral Foundations. 


Television credits include appearances in Time Team and Lewis.


Penny is a member of the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians).
